The Evolution of Printing
Our ability to print is what gives us a technological edge over our ancestors. It is what helps us to spread information, allows us the chance to read, and also means we can continue to improve with our own printing technology. Every few years it seems as though we’re able to come up with a groundbreaking new way to print that is quicker and more effective than ever before.
It’s never been this way. Most of us today might still be able to remember back before printers were available to the average home. Within a few more decades, people won’t even remember that within their lifetimes. But a peek into any history book will reveal that printers were never so common as they are now. In fact, just a few decades back and the thought of a color printer for the home would be absolutely unheard of.
When Printing Meant Handwritten
A lot of people tend to forget that only a few centuries ago there was no way to print except through a utensil that could leave marks and a sheet of material to write on. In many cases paper did not even exist. Question anyone today and they will reckon a pencil that you have to sharpen manually is a relic. Yet in times past the only way to obtain a copy of something was through another person who would take the original writings and then copy them down by hand. This was an expensive process which meant only certain people could afford to own books.
With such a hard time obtaining written material, it is no wonder that so many people suffered in poverty with small education. Reading is a key factor when it comes to a solid education and future. Without it, you wouldn’t be on a computer reading this article right now. Printers today can push out dozens of pages in a matter of moments, a concept that would awe people who have never seen a printer at work, such as in many poverty-stricken areas in third world countries. To have images and words just like that is nothing small of incredible.
Expanding Across the Globe
The invention of moveable type goes back a long way, but it wasn’t until centuries later that the printing press transformed the concept of moveable type into something truly incredible. Printing presses went into use across the world, making more and more printed materials available to people. Movable type started as wood, then ceramic, and eventually was crafted into metal pieces. From there printing presses utilized the technology of movable type and printed off hundreds of sheets of paper about news, pamphlets, and much more for people to read and know the world around them.
The concept of moveable type was what eventually led to the creation of the printing press. While original moveable type designs were still relatively limited, the printing press became used all around the world, and from there history shows us how printing has progressed into machines to be quicker, more efficient, and with the best quality we’ve ever seen.
Bring on the Color!
Black has been the go-to color for printing for decades. Color printing was not considered necessary or in many cases, even possible. Likewise, if color were to be used, it would be a single color and text only. Printing pictures? Not possible. The only way to obtain a picture was through an artist’s hands, or eventually through photographs.
Now printers not only print in color and stunning quality, but they can do much more. A single printer can be a fax machine. It can be a copy machine. It can scan documents into images or as documents on your computer. It can hook up to a computer without wires. You can be in Japan and access your printer through a cloud program and print something in your home in California. We’ve made the need for photo developers obsolete.
Printers are nearly like their own entity now, evolving over time as we craft them to reflect our needs and desires. Not only do we print on paper, but fabric, thick glossy photo paper, edible sheets for cakes, and now 3D printers can make toys, plates, and other everyday items right at home. And if we can do that now, just what will we be able to do in another 100 years?
